As one of many in the ongoing trend of resurrecting old TV shows and turning them into contemporary Hollywood product,Bewitchedtries awfully hard to distinguish itself. It succeeds in lots of surprising ways, not least of which is the star power brought by Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell. Even if they don't create the kind of romantic chemistry that would have elevated the already high concept, they act as delightful foils to each other, but more often to themselves. The conceit of thisBewitchedis that it's a self-reflexive look at the entertainment business, with Ferrell playing Jack Wyatt, an actor starring in an updated version of the classic TV show. Out of favor with the Hollywood elite and desperately in need of a hit, he insists on an unknown to play Samantha, as he wants the show to be abouthim, since if something doesn't come his way soon, he's going to be hearing a lot of no's, despite the yes-men surrounding him. While his agent (Jason Schwartzman in hilarious high Hollywood sleaze mode) gets him the "unknown Samantha" deal, it's Jack himself who discovers his own leading lady in the delightful figure of Isabel Bigalow (Kidman), who possesses just the right nose wiggle, not to mention other wiggles.
But wouldn't you know it, Isabel reallyisa witch, and exactly the kind of "good" witch trying to rely less on her magical powers that Samantha Stevens was back in her "real" world. Instead of a cranky mother like Endora, Isabel has a distinguished father, Nigel (Michael Caine) who lurks around her as a constant reminder that she can't be who she's not (a mere mortal), and she certainly can't be the star of some zany TV show. As the plot thickens and the movie's reflexivity grows more convoluted, Nigel falls for the non-witch actress who plays Endora (Shirley MacLaine), and Jack and Isabel fall for each other. Here's where the Ferrell/Kidman gel doesnt quite become aspic, but her perkiness (I mean, come on, itisNicole Kidman, for crying out loud) and his goofiness (Ferrell is at his peak of intelligent bumbling) are more than enough to make the entirety of the proceedings a delectable trifle. Director Nora Ephron has fun skewering her own business in the script she co-wrote with her sister Delia, and her eye for quality craft makes everything sparkle as it should. Even if we have yet to see the definitive remake of an old TV show on the big screen, at leastBewitchedis well more than run-of-the-mill as so many adaptations have been, and so many will be.--Ted Fry
What Were They Thinking??? I watched this movie at the theaters when it came out. Being a fan of the Bewitched series, I went with a friend who begged me to go see this "remake?". What a letdown. First of all, Nicole Kidman as Samantha???? Bad Choice!!! That was almost an insult to Bewitched fans. She was so unconvincing as Samantha. As far as Will Ferrell, I hated his performance in this movie, not that I enjoy any of his performances. This movie was actually boring and not funny at all. It's the kind of movie that makes you want to leave the theater. I don't know what they were thinking when they made this film, but they surely were not thinking right. This is one movie that I will not be watching again. You expect a great movie and end up with a terrible one!!
Yuck! Awful, uninspired, pointless, annoying and dumb. Nicole Kidman needs to fire those who give her scripts. Will Ferrell needs to quit acting outside of SNL. Enough said.Sadly Disappointing I was so looking forward to seeing this film, being such a huge fan of the original television series, as well as for the quality star line up it contained. Unfortunately, I found it to be sadly disappointing. Though I realize it's a difficult task to not only live up to the original, but also put an original spin on the concept, I found this to be a very weak half baked effort that just didn't seem to know where it was going and what kind of movie it was trying to be. Its concept of the life imitating art premise of an actress auditioning for a remake of the series, and who actually turns out to be a real witch, appeared interesting and promising but it just didn't get off the ground. Instead the characters, pasted on to a very wishy washy plot, turned out to be mere pale impersonations of the originals that weren't particularly funny, and just appeared thinly created and out of date. That was another problem with the film, it seemed very muddled, not really knowing which period it was in. Though Bewitched is a timeless comedy, it was made in a very different era of television that had an innocence and naivety to it which is out of place in this more sexually liberated but cynical of times. I don't see why the creaters behind this film could not have tried to bring it up to date more plausibly, especially given the technology and special effects available. I think it would have been very possible and provided a far more interesting result without doing a disservice to the original. Nicole Kidman is suitably cute and feminine and yes, definately has the nose twitch down pat. But she is no Elizabeth Montgomery and should have tried to make the 'Isabel' character more her own (and without that contrived sugary voice). Much better use could have been made of Michael Caine and Shirley Maclean, who were perfect for the 'Maurice' and 'Endora' roles but let down by a poor script and storyline. I didn't find the Will Ferrell character who played Darrin remotely funny or even likable to be frank, but once again the weak scripting and plot didn't help. I confess I expected so much more from this remake, even without harsh judgement or unfair comparisons to the original, it just didn't stand up on it's own merit at all in my view and was just a poorly made film.
